Matchcoats are smaller blankets that can be worn as an outer protective layer or used as a blanket. The following photos show Michael Alton using the matchcoat as a garment.

Drape the matchcoat over your head and down the back.		Secure at the waist with rope, belt, sash, pin, etc.
Form a hood and secure at the chest with pin, stick, etc.		Ready for any weather. Notice the matchcoat is over all gear.
As it warms up just drop off the shoulders.		Easy to cover all exposed parts of the body.
